Ralf Herbrich was born in Schwedt/Oder, Germany. He received his first degree in computer science from the Technical University of Berlin in 1997 and held a position as teaching and research assistant at the chair for statistics at the Technical University of Berlin from 1997 to 2000, when he received his doctoral degree with top honours. His research interests revolve around the topics of automatic inference, machine learning and applications of machine learning to real-world applications. As witnessed by his publications in a number of key international conferences and journals he is an acknowledged expert in statistical learning theory and kernel methods. Currently, he is holding a position as Senior Researcher in the Online Services and Advertising Group, Microsoft Research, Cambridge, and has been a research fellow of Darwin College, Cambridge, UK, from 2000 - 2003.
